Bermuda Grass Benefits:
Common Bermuda grass grows well in southern states, but it is also cold tolerant. It has a strong root system and is able to handle heavy traffic. It can handle drought conditions better than most grasses and with proper watering will knit a tight barrier against weeds.
Proper Mowing tips:
Never mow too low when Bermuda is not actively growing (i.e. in a drought). Mow less often and raise the mowing height to two (2) inches or more.
Try to mow when the grass is dry, not wet or damp. This will avoid clumps of cut grass gathering and will help to keep your mower cleaner and rust free.
First spring mowing: Set your mower to ¾ inch-1 inch to remove the dead top-growth.
Normal mowing height will be at 2 inches. This is important because the longer your Bermuda grass grows the thinner it becomes, allowing weeds to start.
Try to always mow with a sharp blade. A sharp blade will cut the grass, while a dull blade will pull the grass and damage the roots.
Fertilizing Bermuda Grass:
Brand name Green Charm Weed & Feed is currently at Wal-Mart for $12.00 per bag. When handling any fertilizer, use gloves and avoid skin contact.
Avoid contact on flowers and shrubs.
Apply fertilizer between May and August according to weed problems.
Avoid mowing 1-2 days before and after application of fertilizer.
Apply when grass is moist from dew.
Avoid unnecessary disturbances, including water for 48 hours after application. Watering will wash off the weed killing materials.
Avoid applying is rainfall is expected within 48 hours following treatment.
Use a fertilizer spreader for even application.
Watering Bermuda Grass:
It is better to water deeply as needed, but not as frequently. Your goal is to train your Bermuda grass roots to go deeper without stressing the grass.
Watering should be done in the morning, before it gets too warm out. If you water in the afternoon and evening, a large amount of your water will evaporate and not soak into the ground.
Mower Maintenance:
Change the oil in your lawn mower every season. Check your owner’s manual for specific oil type and instructions.
Rinse your mower deck after each mowing, but wait until mower has cooled down. If you don’t wait, you could crack the engine block. Rinsing off your mower will help prevent the deck from rusting.
Check the blade often for sharpness. Have a file handy for quick touchup. Just be sure to maintain a balanced blade; sharpen both sides equally. You may also choose to have your blade sharpened professionally.
